Honeymoon Hotspots

For many couples, they choose to make their honeymoon a bucket list trip… and for couples in the US, they may go as close as Mexico or even halfway around the globe.  But after the hectic pace of the wedding, it’s nice to get some time to enjoy your first trip as a married couple… enjoying some well deserved relaxation, privacy, and romance.

Finding the perfect location can be overwhelming, so coming to a travel agent may just be the ticket!  And over the last 12 months, I’ve enjoyed researching locations for many couples.  So let’s see some of the bucket list trips that I’ve looked at for honeymooners over this past year!

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Overwater bungalows, gorgeous blue water, and a mountain rising majestically covered in lush green plants… Bora Bora is often said to be the most romantic location in the world.

Whether you choose an overwater bungalow or a villa along the pristine beach, you’ll enjoy your own private island oasis.  An intimate dinner on a secluded soft, white-sand beach or ocean-side on your private terrace may make you feel like you’re the only two people in the world.

You can spend your day lounging by the water in the sun, enjoying time on the water in a canoe, snorkeling or scuba diving in the crystal-clear water, or indulging in the resort spa.

Thailand

The Land of Smiles has many areas to visit.  From the mountainous region around Chiang Mai, the rawness of the Isan area, the rolling hills near the ancient city of Ayuthaya, the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, the soft sand beaches of Koh Samui and Phuket, and all the places in between, there is a place for everyone.

Thailand has many places to visit as well.  From the WWII Death Railway in Kanchanaburi, ancient temple ruins in Ayuthaya, the Floating Market and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok, elephant sanctuaries all through out the nation, colorful and beautifully ornate temples standing tall, and so many more things to see… you could spend a lifetime exploring this amazing country!

For your honeymoon, you could choose to stay in a resort on the beach, an elegant high rise in Bangkok, or a rustic cottage in jungle surroundings.  No matter which you choose, you can’t go wrong!

Italy

Italy is loaded with plenty of romantic places… from the Eternal City of Rome, the rolling hills of Tuscany, the sun-drenched beaches of the Amalfi Coast, the ruggedness of the Dolomites, the shimmering canals of Venice… there is no shortage of amazing places to visit!

And where you go would depend on your interests… beach bum?  The Ligurian or Amalfi coast may tickle your fancy.  Foodie?  Every region has amazing food, but perhaps a visit to Emilia Romagna, where cities like Bologna, Modena, and Parma await!  History?  Well, it’s everywhere!  But who could resist Rome and and Pompeii.  Art?  Again, it’s everywhere!  Works of Bernini,  Raphael, Botticelli, da Vinci, and Michelangelo among the throngs of artists with works all over Italy, many free to be seen because they are on and in the streets and in churches.

So you bring the romance, Italy will provide the perfect backdrop for your honeymoon!

St. Lucia

The only sovereign state in the world to be named after a human woman, St. Lucia captivates anyone who sets foot on her shores.  With warm sands and cool water, St. Lucia combines luxury and adventure with 5-star resorts near ATV riding and zip lining.  Additionally, the Pitons, two cone structures one on each side of a bay, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

St. Lucia is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the world.  There are all-inclusive resorts, mountains, lush rainforests, waterfalls, outdoor adventures and romantic sunsets!  It doesn’t get much better than having lush vegetation or a gorgeous beach in the background for your honeymoon!

Peru

Peru is a must-see destination, and is home to Spin, Chan Chan, the Nasca Lines, and of course, Machu Picchu.

The Nazca Lines are geoglyphs that are traced into the desert floor and can individually measure up to 440-1,200 yards across.  These shapes can best be seen from the air, though some can be seen from surrounding foothills.  Who created them and the purpose remain unknown to this day.

The Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu is a 15th century Incan citadel located on top of a mountain in the middle of a tropical forest.  The area around Machu Picchu is rich in archaeological sites, and includes the Sacred Valley, Inca Trail, and the colonial city of Cusco.

Both the Nazca Lines and Machu Picchu are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Peru is a nature-lovers paradise.  Hiking the Andes mountains, the longest mountain range in the world, can be a majestic experience.  (Let’s face it, Machu Picchu is in the Andes mountains!). Or perhaps you want to experience the Amazon rainforest and see the pink river dolphins and feed each other fresh mangoes and passion fruit?  Wherever you want to end up, there are private cabanas and luxurious lodges to spend your down time the the love of your life.

Dominican Republic

Located on the east side of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is known for its beaches, resorts, and golf.  One of the most breathtaking places in the world, the country is friendly and welcoming!  The second largest country in the Caribbean, it’s just a mere two hour plane ride from Miami.

The Dominican Republic is a honeymooners paradise!  And whether you want to spend your days soaking up the sun, hiking through the mountains, seeing the tropical rainforest, or wandering around town, the Dominican Republic has something for everyone!  With uninterrupted white sand beaches, relaxing waves caressing your feet, and all-inclusive resorts that read like a Who’s Who list, your hardest decision may be whether to seek a unique adventure or relax under a palm tree.

France

Many times, when you think of honeymoon romance in a foreign country, France is what pops into your mind… specifically Paris.  But it’s no wonder, since France is the most visited country in the world!

France has so much to offer… from the romance of Paris’s historic streets with a glistening Eiffel Tower shimmering in the night sky, the coastal villages of the French Riviera that has glitz and glamour and some of the world’s most popular beaches, the Loire Valley with over 20 chateaus and castles, Normandy that includes not only the landing sites of World War II but also the Bayeux tapestry and Mont Saint-Michel- a impressive island with a gravity defying abbey, and so much more!

Paris may be the City of Love, but France is full of other dreamy destinations that are ideal for any honeymooning couple!

Greece

Quaint seaside villages, cobblestone streets, whitewashed architecture, and calming deep blue seas, Greece is a dream for honeymooners!  The most common honeymoon destination in Greece is the Cyclades Islands, which include the islands of Santorini, Mykonos, Maxos, Paros, and Milos.  These islands aren’t known for their long walks on the beach (but don’t worry, there are beaches on these islands).  Instead you’ll find the iconic Greece, where whitewashed buildings cling to the cliff-lined coast, the blue-domed churches, and the brilliant blue Aegean Sea in the background!

But that’s not to say that Athens has been marked off the list.  The birthplace of democracy, the beauty, history, and culture of this city has been an integral part of the world for thousands of years!  And watching the sun set on the Acropolis is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

And the hotels and resorts will help turn this honeymoon into a trip that friends and family will want to go on years down the line!  From watching the sun set in jacuzzi suites hanging on the cliff, suites with a private cave plunge pool, to sitting in a hot tub on your terrace watching the last rays of sunlight hit the Parthenon, Greece will have the perfect hotel or resort for your honeymoon!

Mexico

Whether you’re looking for a beach honeymoon or you would like to visit a colonial town, Mexico can meet your needs.  You’ll have the soft white sands of the Caribbean side and the golden sands of the Pacific side of the country with towns in-between.

And there are many, many activities to keep you busy.  Whale-watching, scuba diving, archaeological tours, cenotes, hiking, dancing in clubs… if you didn’t want to lay back and relax, Mexico will have something that will keep you busy!

With hundreds of amazing all-inclusive resorts, there are plenty of cabanas and Bali beds to help you relax and enjoy your honeymoon!  Looking for a smaller, more intimate hotel?  Don’t worry!  Mexico has many boutique hotels that will keep you coming back year after year!  There is no shortage of luxe accommodations!
